FNF Visit to Kiriko Special School

A team from the Francis Ng’ang’a Foundation accompanied by partners in the medical and education sectors had a great opportunity to visit the Kiriko Special School. The School is situated in Kiriko, Central Kenya. At the time of the visit, the school had a population of sixty five children, thirty two of them being boys and thirty three girls and five teachers. The children have different conditions including down syndrome, autism, cerebral palsy, learning and others multiple disabilities.

We got a tour of the school by the deputy head teacher and were able to see their facilities including classrooms, dormitories and play area. It was commendable to see that the non teaching staff is doing their best to keep the school clean as well as the children’s uniforms. However the school still requires assistance to give some of their facilities a facelift e.g the kids slides.

The children then welcomed us into their class where they entertained us with song and dance. It was heartwarming to see this as it proves that disability is not inability. The team then joined them and we all sung and danced together. This sure did bring out their best smiles.  After the entertainment session was over, it was time to present the children with some gifts which included an assortment of food items, blankets and sheets to improve their living standards.

Such moments make us realize that there is a lot that needs to be done towards helping the vulnerable in our society. Indeed we can all make a difference if we each play a part.
